From Stabæk to North Carolina
A CSP Success Story
We sat down with Trym just weeks before his departure to the University of North Carolina Greensboro (UNCG), where he’s set to join one of the most prestigious college soccer programs in the U.S. After a smooth and fast-paced recruitment process, Trym is now preparing to take the next big step in both his academic and athletic journey. In this interview, he shares his thoughts on the journey that led him to UNCG, what surprised him the most, and what he's most excited about as he starts his new chapter in the U.S.

Trym Linberg represented Stabæk at the senior level in Norway’s 3rd division and on the youth team where they play in the National Youth League, facing top academy teams from across the country, including Rosenborg and Molde.
Trym, first of all – congratulations on landing a stellar scholarship at one of the most prestigious soccer programs in the U.S.! How did you experience the process with CSP?
The whole process went quickly and smoothly. The team at CSP arranged for a college coach to fly in from North Carolina to Oslo to watch me play. After the game, they told me the school was interested in signing me. I had several meetings with the CSP staff, who walked me through the school, the location, and the academics. They connected me with the coaches at UNCG, and we clicked right away. It’s a thorough process to prepare for college soccer, but the guys helped me at every step and answered all my questions.

When and how did the dream of playing college soccer in the U.S. begin for you?
I heard a lot of cool things about the U.S. and the opportunities over there, which really sparked my interest. It’s a sport that’s growing fast, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

What surprised you the most during the process?
Definitely the difference in facilities and locker rooms compared to what we’re used to in Norway. U.S. universities really invest in their athletic programs, and I’m excited to take advantage of those amazing resources.

American universities invest heavily in their athletic programs and facilities. At UNCG, the soccer program has access to two top-quality grass pitches; one for training, and one for matches. He’ll train under a team of four soccer coaches, with full support from a medical staff that works on his body before and after sessions. Off the field, he will get support from nutritionists and other specialists focused on keeping him healthy and ready to perform.
What would you say to other players who are considering the U.S. but are unsure if it’s the right path for them?
Talk to people who’ve already done it, that helped me a lot. Make the most of the experience Mats and Markus have; they’ve been through it themselves and know exactly how it works. They were crucial in helping me understand the opportunities, choose the right school, and negotiate the scholarship.

What was it about UNCG that really caught your interest?
For me, soccer has always been the top priority. UNCG has a strong program, but it’s also a solid academic school with lots of students. It feels like the kind of place where I can enjoy my studies and continue growing as a player.

In addition to its strong athletic programs, UNCG is known for its academic excellence, offering a wide range of respected degree programs and a vibrant campus life. They offer more than 350 degrees for their 20,000 students.
What are you most excited about as you prepare to move over?
Definitely the warm weather and the football!
What was it like communicating with American coaches and schools?
The coaches and the school staff have been super easy to talk to. I’ve had great communication with them and always got quick and clear answers.
Is there anything about American culture or college life you're especially looking forward to experiencing?
Probably just how big everything is over there compared to Norway!
How are you preparing both physically and mentally before heading over?
I’m training hard and just trying to enjoy the whole build-up.
It has truly been a pleasure working with Trym from day one. He’s been clear about his ambitions, highly responsive, and fully committed to the process. From the beginning, his goal was to travel to the U.S. to become a better soccer player and take the next step toward a professional career. We’re incredibly grateful that Trym chose CSP to help guide him on the journey.
Trym is in many ways the ultimate CSP athlete. He is a great example of how dedication and hard work over time can open doors to incredible opportunities. We’re beyond excited to follow his progress and can’t wait to see him make his debut for the Spartans this fall. Thanks for the chat, Trym, and best of luck!
